Two Checked Mathematics Solutions from Scan 4
The following workings refer to question numbers 41 and 42 visible in the fourth question scan, not to a new model paper. The calculations were independently checked; other printed answers have not all been certified.
Question 41: ratio 3:4 with LCM 180
Write the two positive integers as 3x and 4x. Because 3 and 4 are coprime, their least common multiple is 12x. Therefore 12x = 180, giving x = 15. The first number is 3 × 15 = 45 and the second is 4 × 15 = 60. Check: 45:60 simplifies to 3:4, and LCM(45, 60) = 180. The first number corresponds to option b in the preserved scan.
Common mistake: 3x + 4x is a sum, not an LCM. Use the coprime parts of the simplified ratio before constructing the LCM equation.
Question 42: equal savings with different income and expense ratios
Let A and B have incomes 3x and 2x, and expenses 5y and 3y. Each saves Tk 1,000, so 3x − 5y = 1,000 and 2x − 3y = 1,000. Subtracting gives x = 2y. Substituting into the second equation gives 4y − 3y = 1,000, so y = 1,000 and x = 2,000. A’s income is therefore 3 × 2,000 = Tk 6,000, option a.
Check both people: A earns Tk 6,000 and spends Tk 5,000; B earns Tk 4,000 and spends Tk 3,000. Both save Tk 1,000, while the income ratio is 3:2 and the expense ratio is 5:3. Income and expenditure ratios need separate multipliers; assuming the same multiplier would produce the wrong equations.
